Talcott Parsons once proposed the idea that affects together with intelligence and influence might be considered as exchange media of the action system, which in modern society are as important for the motivation and selection of action as once has been social stratification. There is nevertheless no prominent sociological theory of emotions. Only recently the issue is rediscovered. Sociological research emphasizes aspects of a so-called emotion work, which relates to the social competence to measure affects and feeling according to the situation. This introduction to a special issue of the journal on the »sociology of emotions« introduces to several aspects of a sociology of feelings. The introduction as well as the following papers deal specifically with the question, how Niklas Luhmann’s theory of social systems addresses the sociology of emotions. In Luhmann’s theory feelings do not have a prominent place either, yet his theory of emotions as normative amplifications of expectations and as immune systems of the consciousness offer fruitful perspectives for further research. The introduction presents the different papers of the issue and deals with them under the perspectives of a attributional ambivalence theory of emotion and of the distinction between psychic and social systems.

Dynamic effects of emotions on collective thinking and behaving are, so far, hardly adequately acknowledged in sociology. This is paradigmatically showed by the critical analysis of the concept of emotion in Niklas Luhmann’s work in the first section of this article. Luhmann understands emotions essentially as perturbing individual phenomena that have no place in sociology. In the second section, this view is confronted with the concept of fractal affect-logic where emotions are seen as directed energetic states of evolutionary origin that are functionally linked with specific behavioural tendencies and cognitions. Spread out by emotional contagion, emotions have so-called self-similar effects on the collective as on the individual level. They direct attention, perception and memory on extraordinary events, regulate everyday behaviour, and can also provoke sudden nonlinear bifurcations of feeling, thinking and behaving toward new global patterns of functioning. Their effects on social key phenomena like contingent communication, self-reference, reduction of complexity, creation of sense and value-systems further show that collective emotions serve the autopoiesis of social systems. They are fundamental biogenic energies that ultimately mobilise and organise all social dynamics. This view fills a »blind spot« in Niklas Luhmann’s theory and leads to new questions.

A evolutionary-phylogenetic analysis of affect-cognition interaction comes to the result, that both are deeply rooted within basic organismic regulatory processes. Different levels of phylogenetic development, are characterised by specific types of affect-cognition interactions. As invariant function of affect appears the close relation to internal states, influencing all other aspects of behavior. E.g. within instinctive behavior, emotional components seriously influence sensoric, motoric as well as cognitive processes in general. The human level is characterised by the ability to form symbols and symbol systems, leading to new kinds of affect-cognition interaction. One effect are serious psychic destabilisations being compensated by further symbol systems, whose structure is always constrained by the underlying affects. The basic repertoire of affects is seriously transformed within these processes.

The questions as to how emotional states are embedded within neurocognitive processes of social attachment-behaviour are considered using different fields of neuropsychology of perception and of interpersonal relationship. Prototypically, neuropsychological findings of synaesthesia-research are represented and related to the mimesis-theory of the interpersonal coupling, established by R. Girard. A crucial central element herein is the question regarding intrapsychic coherence-formation. It is argued that social stabilization processes may correlate with increased emotional coherence-states on the basis of language-related neurocognitive elementary processes.

Customary, under ›feelings‹, ›emotions‹, or related concepts a phenomenon area is understood which escapes the sociological observation, it is then, this observation refers to analysable semantics of feelings. In this article, the test is made to design feelings or emotions functionally. The result is that one calls feelings itself owes to the ascetic constitution of a consciousness that registers – in co-production with communication – its incapacity to ›mirror‹ directly and completely the perceived complex states of body into social systems. It uses nothing else than signs for its reproduction. Therefore it develops – in collaboration with communication – signs that stand up for that what cannot denote.

We must differentiate between emotions as psychic events, which cannot be observed from outside, and the communication of emotions. In their social function emotions can be understood as symbolic generalized communication media which make the emergence of characteristic interactional systems more or less probable, depending on the type of emotions communicated. Hypothesis is that one of their central functions is to promote the building of organizations that follow a non-emotional logic of decision making and conflict resolution as their »outside«. The differentiation of society in functional systems can be explained as an institutionalization of the negation of the communication of emotions during the civilization process. Emotions play a central role in stabilizing cultural patterns, because complying with or disobeying the rules of a certain culture is answered by the interactional participants through the communication of positive or negative emotions.

The blind spot of sociology in respect to emotions is not merely its lack of an account of emotions, but also its conception of emotions as something pre-social or pre-cultural and thus failing to recognize their genuinely social character. Expressed in the terminology of Niklas Luhmann, emotions are seen as part of the environment of social systems. What is ignored thereby are the affective processes and structures of social systems. The reason lies in an essentialist definition of sociology and the basic concepts derived therefrom. In the case of Luhmann, it is the merging of the elementary social operation communication with meaning by definition and subsequently of social structure with semantics. The precondition of the ability to see emotions as social phenomena lies in a conceptual differentiation, demonstrated via the example of Simmel’s form/content distinction and Parsons’functional definition of the social. Drawing on Parsons’theory, it is argued – thoroughly in accordance with the concept of autopoiesis so central for Luhmann – to conceive of affectivity as a structurally independent component of communication/action.

Is Autopoietic Systems Theory Alexithymic? Luhmann and the Socio-Psychology of Emotions

After a critical examination of Luhmann’s observations concerning the emotions, a theory is developed according to which emotional processes are situated in the zones of structural coupling between organic, psychic and social systems. The theory draws attention to a substantive historical link between rights and emotions. This link is illustrated with some broad examples dealing with specific emotions, and with the generic concept of emotion.
